08:07, 1 апреля 2011

Latvian Central Statistical Bureau’s estimations show that the number of Russian tourist nights in hotels in 2010 was 65% higher than in 2009. These figures have been presented by Riga Mayor Mr. Nil Ushakov at the representative office opening ceremony in Moscow.

Ms. Iveta Sers, Mayor’s Adviser on Latvia-Russia bilateral ties, has been appointed the Head of the rep office. Before the appointment Ms. Sers held rank of Counsul General in Saint Petersburg. She revealed that the office will be responsible for the development of economic cooperation with Russian regions, social-cultural ties between Moscow and Riga and promotion of the “Riga brand”. She mentioned close cooperation with LiveRiga (the city’s tourism development bureau) and pointed out that Russia is one of the key markets for Latvia’s travel industry. The new office’s short-term plans include support of the Moscow Days event in Riga in June 2011. However Latvian capital is not only interested in partnership with Moscow, other Russian regions are on the agenda as well – assured Iveta Sers. For example on October 6-8 Saint Petersburg is to host Riga Days.

The opening ceremony was visited by the Ambassador of Latvia to Russia Mr. Edgars Skuja along with Russian prominent artists and sportsmen like Alexander Masliakov, Gennady Khazanov, Vladislav Tretiyak who come to Latvia quite often and take this country as a close friend of Russia.

During his visit to Moscow Mr. Ushakov had a meeting with the Minister of Transport of Russia Mr. Igor Levitin. According to the minister the train travel time between Moscow and Riga can be shortened by 4-5 hours due to anticipated trains’ speed-up along the Russian part of the route. Today it takes 16 hours to get from one city to the other.
