Maldives revolution has nothing to do with tourists

08:07, 13 февраля 2012

Russian tourists continue quietly relaxing on Maldives, where following confrontations between mutinied police and army on Tuesday the president Mohammed Nashid was forced to resign. Tour operators report that the disorders were only taking place in the capital city of Male located on the island of the same name. Tourists mostly stay on other islands so they were not affected by the civil commotion. All hotels operate as normal.

According to the market players, there are currently up to 2 thousand Russian tourists on Maldives. Pr-director of Tez Tour Ms. Marina Makarkova confirms that the tourists are absolutely safe. “Russians are not affected by the Male situation at all. They arrive to the airport on Hulule Island and then depart to their hotels on other islands straight away”. As for Male, RATA-news source explains, usually there are few tourists there – mostly transit passengers and visitors from adjacent islands.

The head of exotic destinations department of Russian Express company Ms. Marina Zaikina quotes her foreign partners saying that the protests were taking place far from tourist areas and the situation went back to normal by the afternoon. “We are unaware of any tourists being in Male at that time. Sightseeing trips to the capital are quite rare – there is nothing really special to see there” – she explained, pointing out that to be on safe side tour operators advised their customers against travel to Male. By the way, the Russian consulate service came up with the same recommendation yesterday.

The other day Deputy Chairman of Maldives’ President Administration’s Press Office Mr. Paul Richard Robert addressed Russian tourists planning to travel to the islands asking them not to change their plans. “The political crisis that led to such sad consequences has been overcome successfully. In a couple of days the new government will be established in our country and life will come back to normal” – he pointed out.

As per Maldivian statistics, the islands are visited by around 30 thousand Russian tourists each year.
