New Russian tourism web-portal on the way

08:07, 21 марта 2011

Brand new non-commercial web-portal about Russia’s travel resources welcome2russia.ru has been launched in test mode on March 12. This was brought to light by the Head of Rostourism’s analysis and hotel and travel industry management department Mr. Andrey Tiutiunnik and the agency’s Secretary Mr. Oleg Mossev during the Intourmarket trade fair in Moscow. The project’s prime objective is to provide travel related information on Russia’s 83 regions for domestic and international internet users.
According to Mr. Tiutiunnik the project has been worked on for a year already, now it’s being registered as an official mass media. “The regions will be responsible for multimedia content in order for the website visitors to get up-to-date and reliable data on their tourist attractions and latest developments” – says Mr. Tiutiunik – “We want tourists to have an idea about a region and its infrastructure. The texts will be accompanied by colorful pictures and videos.”

As for now only Russian and English versions are available for public. But before long Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic versions will be launched. Mr. Tiutiunnik claims that the website is capable of receiving up to 50 thousand visitors a day. The portal has been developed using the experience of the similar projects for other tourist destinations all over the world. The places of interest mentioned on the website could be easily located using integrated Google Maps services.
“We will place the Federal Register of inbound and outbound tour operators, useful information on immigration and customs regulations and the news about latest developments of the Russian travel industry” – said Oleg Moseev. The calendar of interesting events in the country’s regions will definitely contribute to development of Russian tourism. “Foreign and Russian tourists would have visited one or another event if they new when and where it takes place. Our calendar will feature attractive events for every day of the year in all Russian regions” – added Mr. Moseev.

He also revealed that the portal will be nothing alike Rostourism’s official website. Welcome2russia.ru will be permanently hosting the “Treasures of Russia” contest, similar to last year “Seven Wonders of Russia” competition which was carried out by Rostourism in cooperation with the “100 Roads” website. “The contest showed that Russia has way over seven wonders that are of huge difference and thus can’t compete within one nomination. So we decided to divide them into five nominations – festivals, folk art, natural, historical and cultural and architectural sites. The contest’s first results will be summed up at the Intourmarket trade fair next year.

In the beginning of February Rostourism sent out the participation proposals to regional administrations. During the Intourmarket trade fair the project’s founders called to tourism authorities to provide as complete and detailed information on monuments, infrastructure, events and other tourist attractions as possible. Judging by the reaction of provincial tourism officials, the idea of welcome2russia portal is of great interest and the project itself may become quite a success provided it is adequately managed, promoted and filled out with interesting information.
