Hitch-Hiking around the world

The Petersburg Hitch-Hiking League with the support of the Russian Union of Travel Industry launches a brand new Hitch-Hiking around the World project.

 This was brought to light by Mr. Aleksey Vorov – the founder of hitch-hiking sport concept, the President of the Petersburg Hitch-Hiking League, the record-holder of the longest distance traveled hitch-hiking (around 1,780,000 km). The round-the-world hitch-hiking race will be carried out in three stages. The first one starting in August 2011 will qualify best national teams. The second one all the teams will compete on the same route. And the third one – the round-the-world race itself, featuring up to ten top-rank teams, will get off in August 2012. 

“Everyone has a right to see his planet” – goes the project’s motto. The route will go through Russia, Canada, USA, Mexico, Western and Eastern Europe. Approximate duration – 55 to 60 days.

RUTI’s Vice President Mr. Sergey Korneev says that these days sport and extreme tourism is becoming more and more popular in Russia. It includes expeditions, cycling tours, rafting, mountain skiing and many more. Adventure seekers invent various routes, master them and bring wonderful impressions back home. This kind of tourism produces excitement and satisfaction from one’s achievements. “Sport tourism is a grand social activity that requires certain approach, and the round-the-world hitch-hiking race is a daring and audacious project. RUTI supports this initiative hoping to make the event even more interesting” – said Sergey Korneev.

The insurance coverage of the racers will be done by “KIT Finance Insurance” company. The Head of complex travel insurance department Ms. Gayane Kalendzhian revealed that the every hitch-hiker’s policy will not only cover medical expenses but will be complemented with another risks applicable to the route.

Sport hitch-hiking was born in 1970s in Saint Petersburg. It turned ordinary travel by vehicles moving in the same direction into the full-fledged competitive sport tourism with its rules, standards, traditions and etiquette. The racers require physical stamina, athletic performance, tourism experience, tactical thinking and the understanding of transport flow patterns.
