Moscow and Saint Petersburg account for up to 70% of all hotel bookings in Russia

15:14, 8 октября 2012

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very popular among the Russian tourists as destinations of culture and business tourism. We find they go to Ural or Siberia mostly to visit friends or relatives, Altay to enjoy the beauty of the nature found there and they come to Moscow or Saint Petersburg in order to get acquainted with the cultural inheritance of two capitals and attend different events of interest. According to Oktogo.ru, the attendance of both capitals does not depend on the time of the year or big events. In other cities the number of accommodation bookings is usually stimulated by the holiday times or when big cultural, economic or sport events are held.

In general the guests from Saint Petersburg are looking for accommodation in Moscow and vice versa. Nevertheless, according to the data of the service, among the most active tourists visiting Moscow and Saint Petersburg remain citizens of Yekaterinburg, Perm, Krasnodar and Novosibirsk. These data figures can be confirmed by statistics of Aviasales.ru, the leading Russian airfare search website. The list of regions from where visitors mostly come to visit Moscow or Saint Petersburg from demonstrates an approximate coincidence. The majority of the tourists come from the Central Federal Districts of Russia and Povolzhye. The Train trip usually takes around a day, or slightly more. The amount of this kind of travel accounts for around 50% of the whole amount.  People living in the North-West regions rank in second place (28% go to Saint Petersburg, 24% to Moscow). Moscow is more popular among those who live in Siberia (7%) and Ural (5%) and Saint Petersburg among those from Ural (5%) and the South of Russia (4%).

Russian tourists mostly booked 3-star hotel accommodation in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The demand for this kind of accommodation is around 57% in Moscow and 47% in Saint Petersburg. The average amount per night is 2900 rubles. In 2012 the most expensive bookings made in Moscow were made by the guests from Yekaterinburg, Krasnodar and Hanti-Mansiysk (which were more than 11500 per night) and in Moscow from Ulyanovsk, Yekaterinburg and Krasnodar (which were more than 14700 rubles per night).

We would have to notice that in despite of the growing demand for this kind of accommodation there is a lack of budget hotel accommodation for the business tourists. For instance, if you try to book a room in Moscow one week in advance, you would have to pick among the hotels located far away from the Centre, not necessarily close to any metro stations either. In Saint Petersburg you could book a room for 2900 rubles in the center of the city, but it is generally easier to find a double room rather than a single one.

In totality, according to the All-Union Center for the Study of Public Opinion, at least 60% of the Russian population has got internet access. 40% use the Internet daily, 46% go online looking for some information and only 12% use it for  online shopping. The major parts of internet users are located in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, which is why their citizens remain the main users of the online services for planning and booking their trips.
