Senators intend to stop the tourist flow to Turkey

08:07, 9 сентября 2011

The Federal Council is going to support the idea of transferring the Russian tourist flow from Turkey to Greece. That opinion was voiced by Vladimir Zhidkih, chairman of the upper chamber committee of Youth and Tourism, during his speech at the press-conference in RIA “Novosti” called “New Russian-Greece economic relations in investments, commerce and tourism”.

Mr. Zhidkih noted that recently there were several poisoning incidents in Turkey resorts, involving Russian tourists. But according to him, Turkish authorities will not accept the claims nor will they investigate the cause of the incidents. “We’re not satisfied with the level of security the authorities provide and with the way the parliament is handling the situation”, - says the senator. Furthermore, he thinks that Greece has done a lot recently to attract Russian tourists and serves them as dear guests.

Vladimir Zhidkih stated that his committee sent a letter to the Turkish parliament, describing in detail all the incidents that happened. They are determined to receive a reply from Turkish authorities describing all that’s being done about the issue. “You can say that Russian tourists get a different treatment compared to tourists from Europe, and that’s unacceptable”, - noted the Federation Council representative. The senator promised to raise this subject in Moscow, when he appears before the Federal Council.

It’s worth noting that such statements have already been voiced by the parliament. Before the Duma left for a summer recess, a group of deputies presented a proposition for approval, which offered to stop the tourist flow to Turkey altogether. The point was that Turkey couldn’t guarantee the proper level of security for tourists. On September 1 the Federal Council deputy speaker Alexander Torshin also said the situation with Russian tourists in Turkey was unacceptable and urged everyone to draw conclusions.

Yet another proposition, but this time about Egypt, was made later by the head of the Duma Legislation Committee, Pavel Krusheninnikov. After the incident, when a Russian tourist was raped in Egypt, he advised citizens to abstain from visiting the country, noting that the revolution “stirred up troubled waters”. Also Vladimir Zhirinovsky has called several times upon tourists to stop visiting Turkey and Egypt. It seems that we’ll be hearing more such statements before the December elections.
