Russian tourists showed highest results in 10 years
The number of tourist departures from Russia increased by 32% in 2010. Higher results were seen only in 2000 when outbound tourist flow increased by 59,7%. According to Federal Statistics Service’s data there were 12650 thousand tourist departures from Russia last year – almost 3050 thousand more compared to 2009.
Let us remind you that during the recessionary 2009 only a third part of 30 most popular destinations showed positive dynamic. Actively developing since the first part of 2008 Israel was in the lead with 36.5% increase.
2010 showed quite the opposite picture. Out of 48 tourist destinations that reached five-digit numbers only 3 had minimal negative dynamic. These are Singapore (-1.5%), Ukraine (-6.4%) and Norway (-8.6%). Israel that showed almost the same result as in 2009 (34.2%) only took 20th place.
The hero of the year is Mexico. Thanks to active development of charter programs the country showed unprecedented increase – 3562%. And no wonder, in 2009 the statistic registered 284 arrivals from Russia and as much as 10400 in 2010. However in absolute numbers Mexico holds last but one place in the last year destinations chart. But it doesn’t lessen its services at all.
Generally the destinations with smaller absolute figures, excluding Thailand (+99.4%), are in the lead in terms of growth rate. It is followed by Portugal (+80%), Cuba (+74%), Dominican Republic (+70.4%), Vietnam (+68%), Morocco (55%). It’s not appropriate to say that it’s easy to show a significant growth with such a small figures, there are some destinations, including beach ones that have resembling results but showed low growth rate. Jordan with its 0.9% increase is a good example.
The top three in absolute numbers didn’t change at all – Turkey, Egypt and China. After 2011 Egypt is likely to fall back sacrificing the growing tourist inflow from Russia to the revolution. Just a few steps were keeping Egypt from taking over Turkey’s first place. Both countries put on, but Egypt added 36% (17th place in terms of growth rate), while Turkey added only 20.4% (36th place). Here some other interesting figures: comparing to successful 2008 Turkey showed 7% increase in 2010, Egypt – 36%. As a result Egypt almost caught up with Turkey, losing a bit more than 169 thousand. Compare these figures: in 2008 the difference between the numbers of arrivals from Russia was more than 786 thousand, in 2009 – 351 thousand.
The total number of departures from Russia for various purposes was 39323 thousand – 14% more compared to 2009.
