Travel industry helps many Russian airlines to survive and develop

08:07, 11 октября 2011

The participants of the 9th International Aviation Forum “Kryliya Rossii” (The Wings of Russia), which opened its doors yesterday in Moscow, believe that in order to understand the future of Russian aviation industry, it is vital to answer the question: is it developing in line with the international trends or going its own crooked path? Almost every partaker of the first part of the forum tried to perform such analysis.

Executive Vice-President in Europe, Asia and Pacific of Airbus Mr. Christopher Bakley came up with his own point of view: “The potential of the Russian aviation market is huge, its dynamics leaves the average world’s rate far behind. Nevertheless, the processes that stipulate the state of civil aviation in the world, are still in the early formation stage in Russia today” – said Mr. Bakley. Lack of favorable conditions for low-cost carriers’ development, weak domestic flights sector, consolidation of passenger traffic flows in Moscow aviation node runs contrary with the world’s tendencies of establishing multi-hub systems, extension of airlines’ route networks and setting up convenient short-distance air communication, reduction of airfare costs.

The only process in Russia that is identical with the world’s developments is that the aviation industry works closely with the travel industry. Mr. Bakley held up as a model such vertically integrated enterprises as TEZ Tour (with its I-Fly Airline) and Pegas Turistik (with Nord Wind and Orenair). He also pointed out the air carriers’ growing interest in tourist-related activities (S7 and S7 Tour, Transaero and Transaero Tours).

Everybody agrees that particularly the travel industry helps the Russian airlines to survive and develop. It all is possible thanks to the lack of low-cost carriers and the Russians’ disability to book their flight online for the time being. Quite a significant share of the regional airlines’ turnover comes from international charter services ordered by the tour operators.
