Foreign tourists enjoy MIG flights

07:53, 15 октября 2012

Lots of extreme-lovers go overseas topractice diving, rafting or surfing. But you can get a big dose of adrenaline in central Russia if you like. Recently the “First Insurance Company” insured six clients through the tour operators, “The Country of Tourism” against any accidents during their flight on a MIG-29 jet. The sky fun amateurs were insured against any personal injury, invalidity or death during the whole flight. The total insurance cost was equal to 6 million rubles.

The General Director of the company “The Country of Tourism” Mr. Sergey Skuratov told us that they can send between three and five tourists to fly in the MIG-29 jet monthly. Moreover, this flight could become more popular among both Russian and foreign tourists; recently the guests attracted from overseas have become the biggest fans of this recreational activity. ”The peak of high interest usually falls in the warm time of the year, however the winter months are also in demand. For example, we are preparing a special program for the tourists from Poland, Australia and Japan”, Mr. Skuratov explained.

All the flights take place in Nizhniy Novgorod at the aircraft factory “Sokol”. The tourist package includes a medical check-up, instructional advice with the pilot and a 40-45 minute flight that does not depend on the intensity. The most popular packages are the flights to the stratosphere to the height of 19 and 20 kilometers and the aerobatic figure flights that are performed at lower altitudes. Tourists are attracted mainly by the possibility to see the curvature of the Earth, black space and the brightness of the sun. They usually book the full package which includes transfer, accommodation and sightseeing.

According to the World Tourism Association’s rating, the stratosphere flights on the MIG-29 has entered into the top ten most popular and exciting world adventures. However in general the share of extreme tourism on the market is not very large. As Mrs. Svetlana Shvab, the Director of the Adjusting Department of the “Alliance” company has informed, they insure only about one hundred extreme tourists a year which amounts to less than one percent of all the customers. The most exotic sports offered are diving under the ice in Antarctica and the flights to the North Pole where people go to ski. The insurance rates of such tours are rather high. Mrs. Svetlana Shvab also informed RATA-news that, “In this case, if we were to calculate the amount that it costs for insurance coverage, we would have to include the price of a possible helicopter call out to evacuate the injured, so the insurance payment can not be lower than 100 thousand dollars”, she also mentioned that up until the present they have managed to avoid any such accidents.

As the “European tourist insurance” company’s General Directors’ Deputy Mrs. Yulia Alcheeva said, the number of these rare extreme kinds of tourism is growing, especially thanks to the FITs. The most popular extreme recreation remains alpine skiing. Some countries have even made it a mandatory requirement to have a special kind of insurance for skiers during the winter period. Mrs. Alcheeva also noted that in Austria, tourists may even not be allowed to enter the country if they do not have one at hand.
