Taiwan receives Russian businessmen and sends back the holiday-makers

19:02, 16 марта 2012

According to Taipei-Moscow coordination committee on economic and cultural cooperation, almost 6700 Russian citizens visited Taiwan in 2011, which is 22% more than in 2010. It’s interesting that twice as many Taiwanese tourists come to Russia every year.

RATA-news asked tour operators working on this destination to comment on these numbers. They believe that the tourist flow data includes business trips (majority of visits) as well as tourism (single cases). According to the Development Director of Oriental Discovery company Vitaly Efremov, Taiwan is a traditional business destination where people come to seal computer hardware deals, visit the factories and attend trade fairs, after all many leading computer corporations are located here: Asus, Acer, and others.

Mr. Efremov noticed that over the years the flow to Taiwan hasn’t really seen any increase or downfall; it’s always on the same level. Most clients book a flight and a hotel room. Excursions hardly interest anyone except a couple of people every year who often combine them with their business trips. Most of the clients obtain visas on their own.

Vand International Tour confirms that most of the flow from Russia to Taiwan has to do with business trips. Yulia Krutitskaya, deputy Tourism Director, says that most people obtain visas through the consulate, and do not use travel agents' services. “Even if the trips are bought at an agency, they are mostly for people, who want to attend trade fairs. Sometimes visitors book only plane tickets or hotel rooms, or even an interpreter to meet them at the airport”, - she explained.

Sergey Jan Sha, General Manager of China tour and business-travel, too thinks that business trips are the backbone of the tourist flow to Taiwan. “Everyday I meet people who are working on this destination and can positively say that Russian visitors are all about business”, - he noted. Apart from personal business trips, there are sometimes corporate groups that come to Taiwan to visit factories and trade fairs. Mr. Jan Sha also said that Taiwanese visitors in Russia “are real tourists, who enjoy Moscow and Saint-Petersburg very much as tourist destinations”.

Taiwan is an island in the Pacific, about 150 km from the eastern shores of China. The island has another name that the Portuguese colonialists left behind them – Formosa, it means “beautiful island”. Taipei is the largest city on the island and the capital as well.

Taiwan was an international mystery for some time, because of its vague sovereignty. Being China’s province, yet withstanding the confrontation with PRC, Taiwan managed to rise like a high-tech industrial leader along with Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea. Russia regards Taiwan only as a Chinese province and has no political and diplomatic contacts with the country; yet economic and cultural ties are maintained.
