Malaysia’s Tourism Ministry to fight for the Russians

08:07, 2 сентября 2011

“The Russian market has a great potential for Malaysia. Now we are totally focused on the development of tourism between our countries” – said Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism Mrs. Dato' Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen during her speech at a press-conference marking the end of her week-long visit to Russia on August, 26th.

Last year Malaysia welcomed 24.6 million tourists from all over the world with as little as 32 thousand of them being from Russia. For the first six months of 2011 Malaysia was visited by 22 thousand Russians, which is 15% more compared to the same period of the previous year. The Minister is not too happy about these figures: “Near-by Thailand received 600 thousand Russians in 2010, this is far too many compared to the number of Malaysia’s guests. There is something to work on”. She added that in the follow-up of this visit to Russia the country’s promotion budget for the next year will be fixed.

She believes that the main obstacle for tourism development is lack of direct flights between the two countries. There are two national air carriers in Malaysia – Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and AirAsia. The Minister announced that AirAsia is currently calculating the expenses and income of a direct flight Malaysia to Russia, and the both country’s tour operators are deciding how many seats they can fill. In order for the direct flights to be profitable, steady two-fay traffic should be set.

To begin with the National Tourism Ministry suggests for the Russians to get acquainted with Malaysia through a package itinerary from Thailand. Now the guests of Phuket Island have an opportunity to fly to Kuala-Lumpur for two nights, where they will get free accommodation at some 4- and 5-star hotels.

Dato' Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen hopes that the wealthy Russians will be interested in “Malaysia – My Second Home” Program that offers special conditions for real property purchasing or establishing a private business. The program implies that an applicant receives a visa (employment permit in some cases) for up to 10 years. As of today the Russian tourists can stay in Malaysia with no visa for up to 30 days.
