Turkey leads the pack in terms of the number of Russian tourists perished abroad

08:07, 2 сентября 2011

For the first 8 months of this year Turkey jumped two positions up the rating of the number of accidents involving tourist. Since the previous year the country moved from 6th to 4th place. And in terms of the number of Russian tourists, who died during their holidays, Turkey places second after Russia, which makes it the first of all foreign countries.

According to the database compiled by the Russian Union of Travel Industry from open information sources, in January-August 2010 Turkey held second place in terms of the number of casualties, road accidents, poisonings and other infelicitous occasions. This year it went down to 4th position. However these figures are better than they were in 2009, when after the first eight months Turkey had already had the third place. For the last two years the “medal place” in this “discipline” has been shared between Russia, Thailand and Ukraine. But in terms of the number of casualties Turkey places first this year.

So not only is this negative background of Turkey, that aroused as a result of frequent accidents at the country’s resorts, reasonable from psychological point of view, it is also quite understandable from statistical side. Intoxications, road accidents, bombings and fights at the hotels – not a month or two pass without a couple of serious, sometimes tragic, incidents. Six Russians already died in Turkey this year. The second place went to Thailand, where three Russian citizens perished in 2011. And India with two casualties holds the third position.

We must say that during the first eight months of 2010 there were even more fatal casualties in Turkey – 16 and that placed the country on the first position. Once again Turkey was followed by Thailand with four casualties and Ukraine with two. But this year this tragic list is headed by Russia, just like it was in 2010 – 143 and 40 cases respectively.

Turkey is also in the lead in terms of the number of poisonings – four cases in eight months. The second place is with Ukraine where two cases have been recorded. Another two Russian tourists suffered food poisoning in Bulgaria and Greece. But all these countries all together are far away from Russia with 14 cases of food-borne diseases and enteric infections, mostly at holiday camps for children. And there might have been other incidents we just haven’t been told of.

As for Egypt that was always “ahead” of Turkey in respect of the number of accidents, this year Turkey managed to outrun even the country of pyramids. For example during the first eight months of 2010 there were 18 accidents involving foreign tourists in Egypt, and just 9 in Turkey. Seven and five tragic incidents with Russian citizens were recorded in Egypt and Turkey respectively. During the same period in 2011 the “desert” Egypt provided a scene for four accidents with Russians, while in Turkey there were twice more of them. Since January till August two Russian tourists have died in Egypt and six in Turkey.
