Volunteers set to help out tourists in Moscow

08:07, 29 июня 2012

Starting from June this year, guests of the capital will be helped out by volunteers. The volunteer centre started its work from the 1st of June 2012, and volunteer posts were set up on Arbat and on the Red Square. “Our aim – is to create a quality volunteer service”, – points out Sergei Shpilko. The quality of service will be assessed by professional tour operators in the future. In the next few days another centre will open on the scenic lookout on Vorobievy Gori.

Up until the end of the year there maybe another two volunteer posts opened up – near the Tretyakov Gallery and at the VVC, the number of volunteers will grow to 300, and over the following year will be over 1000 people. All up, 20 foreigner help centres are planned to be opened before the summer of 2013.

The volunteer posts operate from 10:00 till 20:00. The guys work in pairs and in two shifts, are dressed in t-shirts with the symbols of Moscow and the phrases “Welcome to Moscow” and “Can I help you?” written on them. Volunteers are recruited at the website vol.mgiit.ru, which for now is operating on a pilot mode, and in a group on the social network website “Vkontakt”. All willing volunteers are accepted from the age of 14 years and up, the only requirement being a love for Moscow and the knowledge of the English language. 150 people are already registered in the data base, but in reality only about 50 are actually working on the street today. Before setting out to work on any one of the posts,  volunteers undergo a two week training course in the English language and on the sights and scenes of Moscow.

The MFA of Russia recommends its citizens to refrain from travelling to Paraguaydue to the aggravation of the socio-political atmosphere. The report published on the department's website calls tourists to revise their vacation plans till the situation gets back to normal. Tour operators stay calm though: summer is considered to be low season in Paraguay, in addition, the destination that still has visa regime with Russia can’t be called mass: tourists can be counted on fingers.
