90% of tourists in Astrakhan are fishing enthusiasts

08:07, 6 апреля 2012

During the upcoming summer season, Astrakhan Region expects to receive up to 1.5 million amateur fishermen that account for 70% of the total tourist flow to the region, reports the press service of the regional government. However, travel agents believe that the share of fishermen and hunters, who come to Astrakhan, is way more - about 90%. And only 10% of travelers (approximately 200 thousand people per year) come with sightseeing and other purposes.

" Astrakhan is being barely sold as a traditional travel product, very few people come here with non-fishing purpose," - said the deputy director of Astravel company Alexander Belousov. In his opinion, it is connected, first of all, with the fact that there are very few things to show in the region, while the existing historical and architectural monuments are under reconstruction.

It is worth mentioning that a couple of months ago the possibility of launching the first cruise route across the Caspian Sea this spring was actively discussed. However, the market professionals have expressed doubts in the success of this idea unless the cruises are supported by the local authorities. In order to attract tourists a well-organized infrastructure, comfortable hotels and ships, competent guides are needed, and this is not yet the case in the region.

About the bareness of the non-fishing flow tells us the General Director of the Center of Environmental Travel Tatiana Kalishevskaya: "We are sending tourist groups to the Astrakhan Reserve in April and September – to watch birds. In one year we can send no more than 40 people, which is due to the peculiarities of this kind of tourism. "

Blossoming of lotuses, which is one of the brands of Astrakhan, according to the expert, has little demand among tourists as well. "I think that many tourists travel to this region on their own without using the services of travel agents. There are also a lot of fishermen who address recreation centers directly or use services of local exclusively fishing travel companies"- said Mrs. Kalishevskaya.

Interlocutors of RATA-news also noted a great variety of fishing bases available in the region. At the same time the authorities are trying to limit the catch of fish in this region - so that, as noted by the governor of the region Alexander Zhilkin, amature fishing doesn’t turn into trade. The point of the restrictions is likely to become a part of the new federal fishing law, which is now being actively discussed by the experts.

Not less topical for the region is the problem of garbage disposal from the campsites, left by "wild" tourists. Holidaymakers don’t take it out themselves, and these areas are not part of tour business as well. According to the Governor, the question is solved simple: the municipality, or travel companies should offer garbage disposal services, and for violation of sanitary rules - a fine. Also, according to Mr. Zhilkin it’s already decided to install video cameras in places of public entertainment, which will help to real-time monitoring of natural sites.
