Buryatia to attract tourists by game hunting

14:38, 8 апреля 2013

Buryatia – a region on the eastern coast of Lake Baikal – is engaging in development of game hunting tourism. The republic has 65 hunting grounds covering 29 million hectares. Last year the region welcomed some 20-30 foreign hunters; they brought a total of 84 million roubles (ca. €2 million) to the local budget.

Game hunting enthusiasts from overseas have been coming to Buryatia since the 1990's. The most popular hunter's trophy is a bear; an average itinerary stands in €4.5 thousand. And the demand is quite stable; there are even hunting teams from Austria, Germany, Poland and CIS countries that come here on a regular basis.

However, Buryatia's hunting sector still has its problems: poachers, lack of qualified staff, undeveloped infrastructure, and poor choice of services. Another major issue is the export of trophies. "We can't work with our foreign customers directly," said the head of a local hunting farm, Mr. Sergey Sadovsky, "To take a trophy back home, one needs an export permit which can only be obtained at the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia. The procedure turns out to be very complicated."

"We can only attract visitors by historic, eco, health or hunting tourism. So these are what we need to develop," the Deputy Chairman of the republic's parliament, Mr. Tsydenzhap Batuyev, said at a meeting with the region's hunters.
