Tourist Information Center
of the Arkhangelsk
region formed a list of most popular places in the area. The place that
attracted most attention from tourists and locals alike was the Solovetsky
archipelago. The second place goes to the city of Arkhangelsk, the capital of the region. It
was founded by the order of Ivan the Terrible at the end of the 16th
century. The city is renowned not only for its historical heritage, but also
for the wonderful midnight sun. Since the middle of May and up till late July
the sun doesn’t fully go over the horizon, so the city is naturally illuminated
throughout day and night. The third place among most interesting sights of the
region goes to the village
of Kholmogory, where the
famous Mikhail Lomonosov was born.
According to the
statistics, the region is visited by about 30 thousand tourists every year.
Cultural and educational tourism is very popular at the moment. Places like
Solovetsky islands, Arkhangelsk,
Kargopolye and the Pinega river are attracting many visitors every year. Small
and medium businesses involved in the travel industry are supported by
government. The region is also planning to develop eco-tourism: it hoses many
national parks and reserves, where you can observe rare species of wildlife,
like white seals and unique birds.
